Find out more...There’s a moment, usually on the second morning, when it happens. You’re cradling a coffee outside your hut, wrapped in the stillness that only a farm at dawn can offer, and something vast and unhurried crosses the sky above you. A shadow. A wingspan. A slow, tilting circle over the valley.
That’s when you know you’ve properly arrived.
At Great Farm, we talk a lot about what’s on the ground - the hedgerows, the wildflower meadows, the ancient oaks at the field’s edge. But look up, and you’ll find a whole other world going about its quiet, extraordinary business.
The Buzzard’s Kingdom
The common buzzard is perhaps our most reliable companion. Anything but common in spirit, these broad-winged raptors ride the thermals above the farm with the easy confidence of something that knows it owns the sky. Listen for their mewing call, a sound so wild it seems borrowed from a coast they’ve never seen. You’ll spot them circling overhead, watching the fields below with patient, golden eyes. On a warm afternoon, it’s easy to lose twenty minutes just watching them rise and rise until they’re nothing more than a speck against the blue.
Night shift: The owls of Great Farm
As dusk folds in and the fire starts to crackle, the day birds hand the sky over to something older and quieter. The barn owl hunts the field margins with ghostly, buoyant flight. All white and silent, quartering the grass in search of movement. If you’re lucky enough to see one drift past the firepit at twilight, time has a habit of stopping.
Later, deeper in the dark, the tawny owl takes over. That familiar *twit-twoo* - actually a call and response between two birds - drifts in from the wood. It’s the sound of childhood bedtimes and fairy tales, and out here under stars, it’s startlingly yet wonderfully close. Some guests tell us it kept them awake. We consider that a triumph.
The Return of the Red Kite
Now for the one that still makes us catch our breath. The red kite, persecuted almost to extinction across Britain, and now, slowly, magnificently, coming back. With their forked russet tails and long, angular wings, they are unmistakeable once you know them. We can’t promise you a sighting; that’s not how wild things work. But they have been seen over the farm, and each time feels like receiving a gift from the landscape. Proof that nature, given half a chance, will find its way back.
Come and look up
The greatest luxury of glamping at Great Farm isn’t the bed, the firepit, or the silence (though we’re proud of all three). It’s the time - unhurried, unscheduled time - to simply look up. Bring binoculars if you have them and leave your phone in the tent. The sky above this farm has been putting on a show long before we arrived, and it’s one worth watching.
We’d love to hear what you spot. Tell us at check-out — or better yet, leave a note in the camp logbook.
